Internal Skeleton

Original Mixed Media Canvas Painting

45 × 60 cm

What remains when everything on the outside is stripped away?

Internal Skeleton is an original mixed media painting exploring identity, vulnerability and the parts of ourselves that remain hidden beneath the surface.

At the centre stands Internal, divided between two versions of himself. One half exists as a solid black silhouette, while the other reveals a skeletal interpretation, exposing what lies beneath the familiar exterior.

A visual representation of the relationship between the person we present to the world and the person we experience internally.

Set against a muted grey-green background, fractured lines and irregular black markings suggest something worn, damaged and weathered by experience.

Yet Internal remains standing.

The simplicity of the composition is intentional. There are no exaggerated expressions, no familiar toothy grin and no distractions. Just a character stripped back to his most basic form.

For me, Internal has always represented something beyond a character. He is an expression of the complicated relationship we have with our own minds, the identities we construct and the emotions we struggle to communicate.

Internal Skeleton asks what happens when those identities begin to fall away.

Are we defined by what others see, or by everything we carry beneath the surface?

Perhaps we are both.
